Blue and Gray

They were turbulent times …

America came of age … and survived the most serious challenge to our identity as a nation and a people. Still hotly debated, the period from 1861 to 1865 is considered by many to be the defining moment in the evolution of America. Rather than argue the politics, the Doorway Singers turn to the music of those years. As they mirror the fervor of both sides, the pathos of parted families and the not-so-secret longing of all soldiers for a final peace, the songs of the era are both entertaining and enlightening.

Join us for an hour of acknowledging all those who were willing to back up their beliefs with their actions, and the songs that accompanied them. From the comic to the serious, the patriotic to the passionate, enjoy such period classics as Tenting Tonight on the Old Camp Ground, Goober Peas (in medley with its Northern cousin, The Army Bean), Riding a Raid, Lorena, Little Major, Upidee Song, Come in Conscript (Out of the Draft),  Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier, Farewell Father and the medley of Dixie/Battle Hymn of the Republic, plus many others.

Accompanied on banjo and guitar, dulcimer and keyboard, Blue and Gray is a look at the time when America was taken to the crucible, and emerged ready to become the nation of today.
