The
Robert Burns Commemorative
Robert Burns, the beloved poet laureate of Scotland is
given due tribute in this musical tribute.
“He loved much. He felt much. He drank much. He ploughed. He
wrote. He died. His words are eternal.” This was Robert Burns (1759-1796).
Since his death, his words have been read around the world and his songs sung
in virtually every land. Perhaps because he freely acknowledged what others
considered his shortcomings and was quick to forgive, he ranks as one of the
world’s beloved persons. In “The Robert Burns Commemorative” the Doorway
Singers tell the story of his life, his loves, his passion and his tragedy.
His
words, many of which were set to music, run the range from the comic through
the passionate to the tragic. Share a taste of each with such numbers as My
Love, She’s but a Lassie Yet, or Comin’ Thru the Rye. His telling
pen delights with Rattlin’, Roarin’ Willie and the wistfully
affectionate John Anderson, my Jo, or strikes patriotic fervor with Ye
Jacobites by Name, Killiecrankie and There Was a Battle in the North.
All that and more in an evening that includes poetry and song. And don’t forget
the classic song of parting, Auld Lang Syne.
January 25 is Burns’ birthday, but it doesn’t have to be a
Burns Supper celebration to enjoy his timeless music.
