I.                    Introduction to the Hammered Dulcimer           

 

A basic course in the history, construction, configuration and playing styles of the hammered dulcimer. The workshop is designed for beginning players or those with an interest in the instrument and its music. One Hour. Taught by Beverly English.

 

II.                 Introduction to the Highland Bagpipes –         

 

A basic course in the history, construction, configuration and playing of the highland bagpipes. Traces the evolution of this and related instruments, makeup of the bagpipes, chanter fingering and a variety of musical numbers. One Hour. Taught by John Ickes.

III.               Ensemble Singing –      

 

Vocal music in multiple parts. Traces the history of poly-voice music, definition of terms, demonstrations of typical vocal parts sung by women and men, class participation in rounds, unison and harmony singing. One Hour. Taught by ensemble members.

 

IV.              Ethics in Performance –

 

Overview of personal and performance standards for musicians (particularly vocalists). Includes information on negotiation, contracts, typical performance situations, gratuities, audience interaction, food and drink during performances. Stresses professionalism and ethical behavior in all aspects of entertainment. One Hour. Taught by ensemble members.

 

Workshops may be scheduled in conjunction with performances or as stand-alone elements.   Outlines available upon request.
